Twitter Hack Targets Ethereum Co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Resulting in $691,000 Theft from Followers

September 11, 2023.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has fallen victim to a Twitter hack, leading to the theft of $691,000 from users who followed a corrupted link posted on his account. The malicious link, falsely announcing commemorative NFT releases from Consensys, tricked followers into connecting their wallets to mint the NFTs, allowing the hacker to steal funds instead. While vigilant users identified the fake link, the confirmation of Buterin’s hack came from his father, Dmitriy “Dima” Buterin. The hacker, who also sent a stolen “Vitalik Elementals” NFT to Buterin, initially stole around $147,000, which later increased. This incident adds to a series of NFT community social media hacks, raising concerns about platform security and the responsibility of developers in compensating victims.
